Helen Myland thinks that the nature of staff at Think Employment is the main reason why she’s still gaining new skills and qualifications.
Helen has gone on to build on her existing IT skills that will improve her chances of finding work during her time with Think Employment.
We spoke to Helen about her experience with our IT course, the new skills she’s learned and how far she thinks she’s come in just a few weeks.
What is it about the staff specifically you like?
Right from the start they’ve been so welcoming and encouraging, which has helped to give me more confidence. I’ve been studying with Think Employment since the beginning of January. Now I’m on the final part of the IT Level 2 qualification!
What made you want to improve your IT skills with us initially?
I already knew how to find my way around a computer but with me being out of the office environment for about two years I wanted to improve my skills. My thinking was that computers and software are updated all the time, so I knew I would benefit from some IT training. In my last job they used Windows 7 and here I got to use Windows 10 so that was good experience for me. I haven’t got access to computers at home so I wanted to do what I could, while I could, and take as much information in as I could everyday.
Did it shock you how quickly computers and software can change in the workplace?
Yeah and it also made me realise that when I was employed they only ever showed me what I needed to do to be able to fulfil my job. If I ever wanted to learn to do anything else, I had to ask another member of staff; but they never showed me, they just did it for me. Whereas now, after the courses that I’ve done here, I feel confident that I’d be able to sit down, work it out, and be able to do it myself.
It sounds like you’ve achieved a lot during your time with us. How far do you think you’ve come in the last couple of months?
Oh a long way, definitely. I’ve been able to update my skills. The friendly tutors have allowed me to thrive and that, in turn, has given me confidence.
