Functional Skills is designed to give you practical skills that can be applied in your working life. Level 1 Functional Skills English is equivalent to GCSE grade D-G and is widely accepted by employers and universities across the UK.

A GCSE English pass grade is essential for education courses such as access courses, apprenticeships and higher education. It’s also very a common requirement to apply for jobs.
Functional Skills English Level 1 will give you a basic level of knowledge around the subject with the support of our friendly, experienced English tutors. Our English tutors help our students learn at their own pace and learn English level 1 from home.
Our Functional Skills English Level 1 online course is accredited by City & Guilds and is a nationally recognised qualification.
Functional Skills English Level 1 is equivalent to a GCSE English grade 1 to 3 (D to G on the old GCSE grading system). English Level 1 course is popular with adults who failed GCSE English.
Level 1 English is for adults who need to retake GCSE English but aren’t ready for English Level 2. (Which is the that same as a GCSE English pass grade.)

After purchasing one of our online courses, you’ll get access to our online English course via email.
One of our tutors will get in touch for an over the phone assessment so we can personalise your English Level 1 course.
During the course you will cover the following:
- End of sentence punctuation
- Correct use of commas
- Format and structure
- Correct use of apostrophes
- Subject-verb agreement and sentences
- Use correct verb tense
- Identify suitable responses
- Language suitable for purpose and audience
- Identify main points and ideas
- Utilise information contained in texts
- Read and understand texts in detail
- Identify how points and ideas are presented
If you’re unsure which level you should be starting at, an Initial Assessment will give you a better idea of where to begin.
This fully interactive assessment usually takes about 20 minutes to complete. It will give you a clear indication of your current level in English or maths from Pre-Entry to Level 2. The results will help to determine what level you should enrol on.
If you cannot sit your exam at one of our centres, you will need to make your own arrangements with your local exam centre.
Think Employment can’t offer any assistant in finding exam centres outside of our catchment area, we have testing centres in London, Manchester, Leeds, Hull and Grimsby. If you’re near one of our centres then you will be able to sit your exam there.

What assessments will I have to do?
There are 3 exams for this course, Reading, Writing, and Speaking & Listening. Depending on your support package, you will also have the option to attempt marked mock exams before you take your final exam.
Where will I take my exams?
We have our own examination centres in Leeds, Grimsby, Hull and Stockport. If you cannot get to these locations, you’ll need to make arrangements with an examination centre near you.

There’s alot to consider when trying to work out how long a course may take someone. First of all you need to be at a certain level prior to starting, this is why we offer our Initial Assessments free of charge. So that you can be sure you’re starting the right course for you. Once you’ve done the Initial Assessment you will then go through a Diagnostic which will go into more detail and show us your strengths and weaknesses. We will then ask you to go through the units that you need practice in.
In general though, the awarding bodies state that the Guided Learning Hours for this qualification is 55. You can use the calculator below to work out how many days the qualification is likely to take you.
