What is GCSE Maths Higher Tier?

GCSE Maths Higher Tier is the higher of two papers that students can choose from when sitting GCSEs.

GCSE Maths Higher Tier covers the top range of grades. The highest grade that you can achieve when sitting a Foundation maths paper is a grade 9 (or A* on the old scale).

Higher tiers have a greater focus on the Algebra topics, whereas Foundation Tier has a greater focus on Number and Ratio.

It’s important to consider which Tier will be better for your abilities when sitting GCSE maths.

What can I do with GCSE Maths Grade?

If you achieve a grade 4 or above at Higher, you will be able to apply for most jobs, colleges or universities.

If you achieve a grade 3 or lower, you may need to resit to get a better grade.

Is there a GCSE Maths Higher Tier Equivalent?

Yes! The Level 2 Functional Skills maths qualification is equivalent to Higher Maths GCSE.

GCSE can be more difficult to study if you have already existing work commitments or a busy personal life. If you can’t commit to full-time study, Functional Skills might be a better option for you.
